Race Review : Northgate 10km

These are my thoughts on the race…

Northgate 10km hosted by Roodepoort Athletics Club happened last week Sunday 9th July. This was the 20th time they have hosted this race.

I believe that for many this is the first race of the new running season. Midway through winter, just before the Spring racing calendar begins.

In the past, it’s been really cold at the start of this race. This year not so much.

SA Guide-Dogs (GDA) trains Guide, Service and Autism Support Dogs to provide mobility, independence and companionship to the visually and physically impaired.  Their College of Orientation and Mobility train Orientation and Mobility Practitioners who teach skills of daily living to rural communities.  GDA is a fully constituted welfare organisation, registered with The Dept. of Social Development in terms of the Nonprofit Organisations Act, 1997 (Act 71 of 1997) and is affiliated to The South African National Council for the Blind.

The breeds most suited for the work of Guide, Service and Autism Support Dogs are the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever. The Association breeds its own dogs from specially selected breeding lines. At seven weeks old the pups are placed in the homes of volunteer ‘Puppy Raisers’ who provide the first vital year of social and preparation training – but the cost is borne by the Association.

How my Comrades dream began…My road to Comrades 2018

Having attempted to run Comrades on two previous occasions and not being successful, must beg the question so why try again? Granted, I never really got to run the Comrades although I had entered and trained for it, I never even got to the start line. On both occasions, each about 20 – 22 years ago and in the prime of my running career, some would argue, I got sick with the flu about a month out and decided at that point that because of me falling ill, I would not complete the race and possibly cause some serious harm to myself. At the time that seemed a good enough excuse but this time round I am going to be a little more scientific about my approach. Before I get there, let me give you some idea about how I previously trained for the Comrades marathon and how it is going to be different this time round.

Review: Puss in Boots The Pantomime

This past Sunday, 2 July 2017,  my son and I were invited to the opening of “PUSS IN BOOTS”, the play, at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City. Now I’ve been to Gold Reef City’s theme park before, but never had the pleasure of visiting the Lyric Theatre.  A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon for both my son and I, and yet another wonderful opportunity to spend some quality time with my son. Puss In Boots is KicksArts’ first Johannesburg performance, having previously already produced 12 sold-out, multi-award winning pantomimes in Durban over the past 14 years, is a must see for the family this winter school holiday season.

Why we should say “Sorry” to our toddlers

The other day as hubby walked out the house he waved to our son and promised him that he would be home early so that they could go out to the local park together.

By the time hubby arrived it was dark, cold and really too late to go anywhere.

There was a multitude of words from hubby to our son, but none that said:”I’m sorry”.

As kids often do, by bedtime, that he had not gone to the park as promised had been forgotten.

I have a problem with what happened though.

I don’t want their relationship to be one of empty promises and no apologies, due to the lack of ability to fulfill what you as a parent had agreed with your child. As a parent, I don’t think we should be ok with because they are still so young to understand, as a parent it then makes it OK to disappoint them and not apologize for it. Happy with the notion that “they will get over it”.

And so it begins…my road to Comrades 2018

Darren aka my hubby has decided that he wants to run Comrades next year, taking place 10th June 2018. Starting out in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. #Comrades2018 will be a down run and the 93rd. It’s a goal he has set himself after years of not running anything further than a 21.1km and his focus has been mainly in cycling until now.

He is going to be sharing his road to the start line through a series of weekly posts.

The Reversed Bucket List

The other day Melissa from Mel’s Postbox nominated me, among other bloggers, to create our own #ReversedBucketList.

Challenge was accepted. What was I thinking?!
